The Inevitable Crunch? |

"The word 'inevitable' has an inescapable meaning." Broughton. The inevitable always happens, and it's sad that those in power will not learn from failures of the past. Keeping one's eyes and ears open to reality is always a good idea and costs nothing. But today's politicians see nothing but the stars in their eyes and will do and say absolutely anything to obtain or maintain political power. They are notorious for catering to the "couldn't care less" majority voters by sitting on imagined minorities. Obviously they are convinced that they are mentally superior and only they know what's best for everyone. But it's also inevitable that they will push their luck a bridge too far and get themselves "un- voted." When democracy turns against them, they shake their heads at the lack of intelligence of the unheeding idiots they presumed to rule. However, Enoch Powell's statement that "all political careers end in failure," doesn't seem to sink into their addled brains. The power and glory of public office are more important than the damage they cause. As history shows, when logic, honesty and decency fly out the window, that's when civil violence starts. The people have no other choice because deliberate deafness of authority is political convenience personified. It's called burying one's head in the sand. Reality ignored, historically results in defeat at the polls. New Zealand today is sliding backwards. A once wealthy progressive country, it is shaking its head in shame at current political happenings. Interest rates are one of the highest in the civilised world and the rate of home ownership is plummeting. Inflation is caused by the increase in government and local council expenditure upon themselves, not the cost of imported goodies. Although the price of oil is disconcerting, most inflation has been home made for many years. The insidious increase in taxes to fund handouts designed to buy votes, is destroying initiative and many are fleeing the Land of the Long White Mortgage. The fact that from a population of more than five million, about 20% choose to live offshore, speaks for itself. There's no shortage of money for government to spend on political advantages, but society's basic infrastructure is about two decades behind expectations. The value of wages has dropped about 60% over the same period. Personal debt is encouraged to keep up with modern lifestyles and saving for old age is almost impossible. Family life is fracturing, causing escalating personal problems. Children are stolen by the State using pathetic excuses and fatherhood is treated with contempt. Every week sees fathers denied of their children, picketing Family Court Judges and lawyers private homes. The presumed power of the State is overwhelming basic commonsense, and the individual is regarded as a profit centre by largely unessential authorities. There's been a massive increase of repressive legislation designed to ensure political control over all aspects of individual behaviour. Teenagers are naturally rebelling with the active encouragement of parents and youth drug and alcohol abuse is at unimagined levels compared with past generations. Rape, home invasion and child abuse causing death are commonplace and increasing hand over fist. Short, frustrated, tempers are creating many physical assaults and the prison population is the second highest in the world. Public hospitals denied funding, are turning away patients who have in many cases been waiting several years for life saving operations. The old saying that the inevitable death of one, makes room for the birth of another, is no longer applicable. Unnecessary deaths are here to stay and legally sanctioned by the "system." With people living longer, the frail elderly are placed in the care of pathetically underpaid and largely unqualified home-care nurses. Most do their best but when financial and day to day frustrations reach a certain level, poor judgement is the inevitable result. Is the coming crunch also inevitable? |
