NZ's Maori Party |
"Small crimes always precede great ones. Never have we seen timid innocence
pass suddenly to extreme licentiousness." Jean Baptiste Racine. There's a stalemate in New Zealand politics at the moment. Each major party is exaggerating its virtues and blaming the other in advance for the swing of the pendulum that will decide the next election. Seeing that there's little between them. Most Kiwis are ambivalent or couldn't care less. Que Sera Sera. It gets a little discouraging to note that politicians don't give a hoot about anything except themselves. Therefore, the formation of the new Maori Party has created considerable interest. Essentially developed to fight the ruling Labour Coalition Government over the seabed and foreshore issue, the recent by-election gave Maori an overwhelming mandate to expand their political horizons. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the issue is irrelevant. It's most refreshing to see that Maori are at last standing up for themselves. Indeed, the influential Tainui Tribe have told their Maori Labour MP to resign from the Labour (Socialist) Party or they'll find somebody else to represent their interests. Maori, at the most, are about 20% of the population and are expected to hold a small percentage of the popular vote. Not exactly earth shattering but it's a start. A small acorn occasionally grows into a large oak tree. No doubt there will be endless battles with the dominating tribes seeking power over the slave tribes. Indeed, Maori history is peppered with tribes invading each other's territory, murdering and eating the warriors and taking the women as slaves. But with the coming of the Pakeha (white man); the invention of Kentucky Fried, Pizza Hutt and MacDonald's in the late 20th century, cannibalism is no longer essential. However, it's no coincidence that the more things change, the more they stay the same. It's only the emphasis that changes. Takeaway food against breed your own. Slavery to the economy instead of slavery to the conquering tribe. The seven Maori seats have traditionally been Labour Party supporters but will now support whatever major party supports them. They are learning that 'hypocrisy,' means self interest. Maori territorial politics have now gone national. This should make the Labour Party rethink its position on Maori hand-holding. The National (Conservative) Party, at present staging a comeback, will also have to consider the Maori vote. This will go against the grain of established politicians thinking their imagined elitism gives them irrevocable rights to do anything they so desire. Egotistically promoted, many of the current Labour and National policies are against commonsense and decency. The insidiousness of these policies will lead to reduced human rights and the loss of established personal freedoms. It's a backdoor attempt to bring about an authoritarian regime by suppressing human nature. But history tells us this doesn't work. Adolf Hitler's, National Socialism (Nazism), was a good example that inevitably failed and caused almost 90,000,000 worldwide deaths. The Maori are not a stupid people. They're probably one of the most intelligent indigenous races in the world. They, along with increasing numbers of starting to think Pakehas, will tell the major parties where to shove their irresponsible policies. It's no accident that the historic Maori brown-eye is designed to insult the enemy. Spitting, sticking out the tongue and rolling the eyes, are also expressions of contempt. New Zealand politics is in for an intriguing time. The old attitude of leave everything to the government is now redundant. NZ's standard of living used to be one highest in the developed world but after thirty years of failing economic and social policies, Kiwis are near the bottom of the list. The numbers in prison and use of the killer drug 'P' are second only to the USA. It's not a good omen for the future. Political violence is unknown and politicians with stars in their eyes can go anywhere with the minimum of security. Sadly, with the self promoting VIP's ignoring commonsense and public opinion, the onset of political violence is inevitable. It will not be pretty but domestic rebellion has never equalled children's TV. The more government cracks down on dissension, the more it increases. This is the nature of the human race and no amount of official edicts will change reality. Political arrogance backed by violence has always encouraged rebellion. The only question, are Kiwi politicians bright enough to learn from history? Think about it, Herr Egotistical Politician. NZ's ball and court don't belong to you. |
