"It takes a wonderful brain and exquisite senses to produce stupid ideas." George Santayana. New Zealand is on the road too nowhere. By the left, quick march. Hup two three four. Do as you're told and obey the law. Or be slammed behind the jail house door. Hup two three four. Pay ridiculous taxes ever more. The year 2004 will go down in history as the year New Zealand died. There will be little violence or major protests. Just the tearful acceptance that honesty, decency and commonsense are dead and buried. School kids won't know they're being brainwashed to accept mindless occupations. They will think it's normal to nod wisely and agree with everything politicians say. As long as the system dishes out a piece of paper saying young Johnny has qualified at hip hop and can count the number of toes on one hand, he'll think he's a genius and qualified to rule the world. Without doubt, 2004 has seen more unwanted and totally useless legislation passed in more than 200 years of NZ's history. No doubt this article will be rubbished by politicians who profess to know everything. This writer will be placed on the list of people to be ignored and persecuted if they can find a plausible excuse. Mind you, national security is always a good excuse to jail people without charging them with anything. 'I plea guilty, Your Honour. But there are mitigating circumstances. My childhood was deprived. I was forced to ride my bike to and from school without a crash helmet. Look at the advantages modern kids have. Mom drives them to school and picks them up afterwards. Is it any wonder I developed a mind of my own? It's not my fault that constructive thinking is now against the law.' A recent demographics study of NZ society between 1986 and 2002, show that 33% of people are doing very well if they live in the right area. Another 33% are barely making ends meet and the last 33% are living below the breadline and excluded from mainstream society. The situation is predicted to get worse. Whatever happen to the society that our forefathers died for in numerous wars? Were they not protecting the freedom of future generations? Have their deaths been wasted to allow self-confessed geniuses to live comfortably at public expense? The most useless legislation of 2004 include the Foreshore and Seabed Bill, the Civil Union Bill and introducing no smoking in bars and restaurants etc. The Foreshore nonsense allows the government total control of the coastline. NZ is surrounded by water and the thousands of beaches could, if the State so wishes, be barred to the public. Kiwis have always had free access to the beaches without anybody owning anything. The tide will continue to rise and fall long after mankind is extinct, so just what is being achieved? The Civil Union Bill allows homosexual and defacto couples to have their status officially recognised but not the same as a normal marriage. Gays will still do whatever they've been doing since time began and defacto couples are still going to live together and to hell with the law. Nothing will change, so just what is the point? The non smoking edict is irrational. The political excuse is to stop bar workers inhaling second hand smoke and developing lung cancer. Therefore, 25% of the population are effectively barred from licenced premises. Overseas experience has been a disaster for the booze business but officialdom denies the obvious and say that everything's fine and dandy. Ireland alone has experience a 15-25% drop in trade along with the inevitable unemployment. But if politicians were to think sensibly, which I suggest is an impossibility, they would realise that mankind has been dying of lung cancer long before tobacco was introduced from South America. Today's smokers are still going to smoke and people will still die of cancer. Motor cars will continue to kill people, yet they won't be banned. If the truth is known, politicians have killed more people than natural disasters, smoking and motor accidents ever will. Maybe they should ban themselves if they really have the people's welfare at heart? Please Mr George Bush, invade New Zealand and liberate us from the mindless fools destroying a once viable country. Apart from 120 politicians, we don't have any WMD, but I'm sure you'll think of something equally implausible. |
