The arrogance of politicians.

The modern day trends in New Zealand are most disturbing.  While it's one thing to have a socialist government, promoting a communist style society, is another.  Slowly but surely, the state is taking control of all aspects of day to day living in the land of the long white mortgage.  The Labour Party has taken upon itself to change a free and democratic society into a Hitler style regime. Do as you're told, or else!  The largely ignored anti smoking laws are only one example.  May 31st, promoted as smoke free day, was laughable.  Now the "experts" are demanding a booze free day.  To celebrate the occasion, booze tax has been increased to more than three times the inflation rate.  I guess
somebody has to pay for the 23% increase in paper shuffling civil servants.

Local councils are just as bad as central government.  They have given themselves the power to do whatever they want, no matter how stupid.  It's not about commonsense, decency or improving infrastructure, it's about gathering unbridled power into the smallest number of midget minds as possible.  We know best, so do as you're told, and guess who has to pay for the "experts"
putting ticks in little boxes?

An international company built a large telephone answering office employing about 150 people and to make the building attractive, they planted rows of native trees around the parking lot.  However, the local bureaucrats decided that they wouldn't allow more than four trees in a row and the landscaper had to dig most of them up and throw them away.  Pray tell me, where is the commonsense and just what is being achieved?  The company is now considering moving its nationwide service to India.

The government has decided that Telecom must unbundle its copper wires to allow broadband competition.  From the consumer (vote buying) point of view, it might in several years, lead to cheaper and faster broadband.  That was being achieved anyway but in reality it means state control of NZ's largest company. Naturally it's all Telecom's fault and heads are rolling.  More top international management talent is being lost.  How does this benefit NZ?

It's disquieting that more people are saying stuff NZ.  We're going where the grass is greener, the pay higher and taxes lower.  Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye.  Thirty thousand left last year and only ten are predicted to return.  Is it really, as a long dead politician commented on the mass exodus to Australia in the 1970's, that the exodus will increase the intelligence level of both countries?  Yeah right!

In all fairness, the remaining people have nobody to blame but themselves. They are stupid enough to accept everything the politicians say as gospel.  They fail to realise that Hitler used the same trick that commonsense dictates as self focussed  propaganda.  Now the Maori Party want NZ smoke free by 2010 on the grounds that it will encourage children to grow up without stunting their growth.  NZ already has the tallest people in the world.  I've smoked for many years and at 6ft 3in, I wonder how tall I would have been if I hadn't taken up smoking?  And no, I don't have any health problems apart from over taxation and the never ending repressive legislation.

Sadly, NZ is run by arrogant and ego driven people.  I wonder how long it will be before we have Fiji, Solomon Island and East Timor style civil unrest?  Their governments all said that we know best and protests will never happen in our paradise on earth.  But they did! Work it out for yourself.
