"Show me a government that can control the people without the use of violence, and I'll show you an ice cream that doesn't melt in your mouth."      Broughton

I suspect deliberate arrogance coupled with naive stupidity is the reason New Zealand is sliding down hill faster than an Olympic skier.  I don't know why the politicians insist upon "pat me on back" acknowledgement..... their contribution to NZ is negative.  An umbrella the right way up sheds the rain, but upside down it fills with water and collapses.  Upside down NZ is collapsing beneath the onslaught of laws designed to demolish commonsense, honesty and decency.  There are more laws propagating political stupidity than there are credit cards and dead sheep.

The latest law proposed is to ban smacking children because physical discipline is regarded as cruel and inhuman.  So if passed, smacking kids will be a crime punishable by whatever the "experts" see fit.  One must feel sorry for the politicised police force.  Will they use handcuffs to contain an aggressive four year old?

Sue Bradford is the Green Party politician who introduced the anti smacking bill.  She's a housewife, and should have stayed at the kitchen sink.  I understand she's in the running for  he Southern Hemisphere Redemption Award.   The ruling Labour Party need the Green vote to stay in power, thus backing the Bradford bill is essential to keep the Greens in Labour's bed.

In the run up to the 2005 election the Labour Prime Minister was asked if she agreed with the anti smacking philosophy?  Her reply indicted she believed smacking was human nature and should not be controlled.  Now she's in favour of the Anti Smacking Bill.

Her change of attitude is about greed for power, not the welfare of kids and their unenviable parents.  Perhaps this is yet another example of the manipulation of truth for political ambitions?  The word hypocrisy might be considered acceptable in some circles, but most decent people find it repugnant.  Politicians should remember they are out numbered by people who don't suffer ego driven dementia.

The current situation is laughable.  In 1989 physical discipline was banned in schools and teenage terrorism become fashionable and untouchable.  Youth crime, drugs and blatant physical and sexual aggression have become the norm.  Prison numbers have almost doubled and NZ is second only to the USA in the per capita number of jailbirds living at public expense.  Yet armed violence by police is permitted and the unspoken reason the NZ Army exists is to protect the politicians from the people.  Armies don't use violence, now do they?

The current left wing socialist government has introduced so many unworkable anti social laws, that kids don't understand the basics of their own existence.  Their education is designed to ensure they can't think for themselves and anything government says is the only  ay to go.  But kids aren't as stupid as politicians would like them to be.  Hence the continued introduction of laws designed to put down individual thinking.  Big Brother knows best, so do as you're told, or else.  No to this and no to that, and you will need written
government permission to do what's left.  Human nature and initiative are now illegal, immoral and will make you fat.  So no smoking in bars and eat at your nearest fast food outlet twice a day.  The tiny health risk from smoking is officially Adolf Hitler in disguise but obesity caused by fatty foods is unobjectionable because the fast food industry keeps the political system ($$$$$$) viable.

In days of old.... when commonsense ruled bold.

My own background is a classic example of a society that actually worked to everybody's advantage.  My 1936 tricycle was cumbersome.  It was my pride and joy.  Aged three I would disappear for hours exploring the world and always returned home by tea time.  If I did wrong, I was belted with a leather strap and told what I had done wrong, and that I was being punished to make sure I remembered my mistakes.  Aged five, my two wheeled bike had a 28 inch frame, no gears and the only way to stop the thing was to pedal backwards.  The pedals were built up with large wooden blocks to compensate for my short legs.  There was no such thing as a plastic safety helmet.  I even managed to pedal the three miles to school without the
world collapsing or my parents delivering me by car.  But on the way home I would deliberately get lost by going fishing at the local wharf.  Aged six, I could swim the three miles across Evans Bay in Wellington Harbour in the morning, and back again in the afternoon.  All these achievements happened without local council dictatorship, parental supervision, bureaucratic authorization and there were no such thing as social workers to ensure I wasn't being disadvantaged by arrogant parents.  NZ had perhaps one or two murders
a year.

I was caned (strapped) numerous times at college for being cheeky and belting up other kids. But I certainly didn't harbour resentment for the science master who lost his temper and belted me more than the normal six times on each hand.  I simply punched him unconscious and left him to drown in a puddle.  Seeing that there are two sides to every story, that was the end of the matter.

My parents and school teacher's initiative trained me to think for myself and at seventeen I hitched hiked the length and breath of South America.  I witnessed many examples of political aggression and brutality and was shot at several times.  You might have guessed it wasn't me that died.  He who shoots first, wins.  One learns by making mistakes.... it's called experiencing life.  That's why good parents use physical discipline to teach their kids to survive.  Note that every animal species on this planet uses discipline to ensure their offspring stand a chance of growing to maturity.  Are we going to punish a mother bear for cuffing her
cub to keep it away from potential danger?  Do monkeys need social workers peering over their shoulders?  On the other hand, should politicians have armed security people to protect
them from problems created by themselves?  Maybe Kennedy got what he deserved?

My adult life was normal and thus somewhat boring.  The only real trouble I had was dealing with bureaucrats and politicians.  Both were essentially dishonest and caused problems with the bullshit they called official policy.  I might add that my limited dealings with eight lawyers over the years showed they also possessed a high degree of incompetence.  One went to jail, five proved bloody useless and the remaining two gave barely plausible value for their over estimated services.

Today's world is vastly different from the one of my tender years.  Corruption, lies, dishonesty and  underhand dealings are now the norm in a society that's falling apart at the seams.  Murders average about one or two a week and NZ now leads the world in child abuse. Youth crime and suicide have skyrocketed and the lowering  intellectual level of politicians and bureaucrats has to be experienced to be believed.  There are so many ridiculous laws, one would have to live 500 years simply to read them all. Even though 80% of polls show the NZ people don't agree with the anti smacking proposal, society's failures will undemocratically pass a law making the normal disciplining of wayward children illegal.  Whether you agree or not, teaching your kids the facts of life in the time proven way, will be deemed politically unacceptable and you could be jailed.  Naturally the politicians have the cheek to say their arrogant dictates are democracy in action.

If the smacking laws are introduced, it won't take long for little Johnny to realise he has full power over his parents.  Kindergarten and school will be the obvious places for him to learn that the law is designed to cater for pint sized terrorists.  He will simply dig his toes in and refuse to follow instructions.  His experience in life is limited and his world extends as far as the end of his nose and there's no a damn thing honest parents can do about it.  Time out and go to your bedroom are unenforceable.  How do you make a kid do something he doesn't want to do?

Even parents with the best of intentions will get short tempered and eventually lash out and possibly cause injury.  Child abuse in NZ is painfully disagreeable without increasing the risk of creating legal culpability for normal parents.  The social pressure on parents is stupefying these days, but only a paltry number of kids are killed, so what is the point in increasing the numbers with egomania posturing?

Question: Has there ever been a violence free society on Earth?
